Lindy Hop was born to the sounds of Big Band Swing. Here are a selection of swing CDs which include some good music for Lindy Hop, Jitterbug or Jive. Whilst not all tracks might be suitable for swing dancing, they will certainly get your feet tapping.
Rhythm and Blues CDs for Lindy Hop
As the big bands gave way to smaller groups, the sound changed. Rhythm and Blues has its feet firmly in the blues but carries the influence of a swinging beat. Raucous up-beat rhythms are the perfect music for Jive dancers and Lindy Hoppers alike. But not all Rhythm and Blues is hard hitting. The mellow shuffle beat of some tracks is perfect for Lindy Hop’s 8-count patterns. This selection provides a start for your exploration.

Modern Bands for Lindy Hop
Ever since the swing dance revival of the 90’s there have been plenty of bands recreating the sounds of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Some have recreated the recordings faithfully, but many have added their own unique flavour. There's a great selection here so get your dancing shoes ready to jive and jitterbug.

Hillbilly and Rockabilly
With a familiar boogie beat, many hillbilly tracks are fantastic for Jive and Lindy Hop. Western swing is popular with many dancers and you’ll find many swing standards with a country flavour. Rockabilly simplified the sound and provided the driving beat heard in rock and roll. The CDs here are very much a starting point as there is just so much to explore.

Rock and Roll
With its roots in rhythm and blues, swing and hillbilly music, there is much disagreement about when rock and roll began. Bill Haley’s ‘Rock Around the Clock’ is undeniably a rock and roll hit and this features a strong saxophone lead. As the fifties progressed, the genre moved towards guitar led hits. Rock and Roll is often considered to be music for jive, but it can make fantastic music for Lindy Hop too. Just watch the dancers in the film ‘Rock Around the Clock’ as they dance Lindy turns and circles.
